I know, that I was extremely disrespectful in my last post towards the secession of Native Americans from the U.S. That was entirely beneath me and very inappropriate. I am not at all pleased that I was voted for in top blogs for something that was so very disrespectfully said.
I made myself look like a very narrow minded person. I’m really not. I am not saying that I have changed my opinion at all. But I would like to set some things straight and be corrected if I have anything at all wrong. I am willing to recall my ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out’ attitude. But I’d like someone to answer my questions.
Just a couple facts first: Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. The new country would issue its own passports and driving licenses, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship
Map Shown here:
1.) How are those many who are sitting on reservations going to react when this potentially means no welfare or grants or any type of U.S. Government assistance? (I know that they have Casino’s built on their land that are not taxed. I would like to argue that those casino’s need local non-Indian money to operate.)
2.) What will happen if the U.S. declares that the new country will be passport required? As it is, the US Dept. of Homeland Security already requires it for other foreign countries. What if they put up major border precautions around the land and post a shoot to kill order? Imagine the outrage when they enter the USA illegally without passports, visas, etc. They will become ironically, the new illegal immigrant into the USA.
3.) Locally, how will people react to being told if they want to keep their homes and their families where they are, they must renounce their U.S. Citizenship? What if there is backlash from local people? People refusing to let them just have what they want?
4.) Do the Lakota/Dakota/Sioux feel the same desire to reimburse other tribes they fought, killed and pushed out of their rightful territories only a decade or two before we came along? Is it not the order of things in life, to conquer and overcome? Why weren’t the English or the French or the Spanish robbed of their lands and enslaved?
5.) Not paying taxes sounds great to me, but the majority of them aren’t paying taxes now because their incomes aren’t high enough now. Reservation Indians don’t pay property tax to the US government. But the lands they own outside the reservations (if they get their way and become a separate nation) may be subject to forfeiture by the US. They may not be allowed to own land other then what they secede with. So what happens when over population occurs?
6.) If they piss off the U.S. enough, what happens? Starving them out will be Childs play. All their goods and services will have to be trucked through the US or flown across US airspace. What happens if the U.S. does not permit other countries to trade? I believe we legally have the right to restrict what happens on our territory?
7.) Does anyone else think this seems like a few speaking for the many? It really seems to me, reading the bias American Fox type news and Native American news (if you can find it on native American websites since it seems kind of scarce) That this wasn’t a universal decision.
8.) They lived on their land and off the land for many many many years, why do they suddenly need support and imports now? Weren’t they already Sovereign?
9.) How can they afford to be Self-Contained with Gas, Water, Electric, Food, and Building Supplies? How will they provide all those services? Where will they come up with all that funding? Will they really be self contained? Will the US see fit to put border patrol up? Will the US see fit to control the surrounding area? The only way they can do any of that is if the US will keep IT’s border wide open for them to come and go. What if they don’t?
10.) Just because we are in a new millennium does that mean we will be more lenient? The last time some areas and people tried to secede from the union a lot of blood was shed. Hundreds of thousands died. Do you think that the federal government won't be just as vicious again?
Do you see where I’m coming from now with my admittedly very badly thought out former post?
Check this from a woman on a thread site, I checked some of the information and found what I did check true. But I did NOT check all of it, so some of it might not be:
“Research AIM *(American Indian Movement)* and Russell Means thoroughly before you start waving your flags, folks. Russell is an attention ho and the AIM guys were mostly drunks, druggies and womanizers. My husband and I are natives. He is an elder but was in his 40's during the Pine Ridge take-over. He went to see what it was all about. A lot of those guys were returning from Viet Nam and very blood thirsty and nuts. The Lakota people didn't want to have anything to do with all that violence. Many of the hostiles were metis whose families had been expelled from the tribe and found that they were too much Indian to make it in society and too much white to make it on the rez.
The Lakota people do not want this and I guarantee they wish these people would crawl under a rock. Of course, we are acutely aware of the injustices that have been perpetuated on our people. But this is NOT the way to bring about justice. This way will hurt many, many good people.
What did they discover about Anna Mae Pictou Aquash? Well, the AIM guys said the FBI killed her, but the AIM guys did it. Her daughter Denise Malone Pictou said, "Arlo Looking Cloud has now been tried and sentenced to life in prison for our mother's murder. Twenty-three sworn witnesses, including former members of the American Indian Movement gave testimony, a video of Looking Cloud's confession was shown naming Mr. John Graham a.k.a. John Boy Patton as the man who shot my mother. This was all reviewed by a jury before they voted to find Mr Looking Cloud guilty. Additional evidence and witnesses will no doubt be presented during a trial for Mr. Graham. We look forward to scrutinizing that evidence as well, in the pursuit of justice."”
Right about now…I’m thinking Bush will be doing one hell of a happy dance out of that Oval Office. The next President better be one hell of a leader or we are going to be in some seriously deep shit. (Maybe I should say Deeper?)
Again I’d like to apologize for my extreme lack of respect towards the subject."
Thank you to all who taught me something these past two days, especially underground1986~ Joy
